MOBILE SURGERY UNIT (MSU)
.
The Mobile Surgery Unit (MSU) of RC-SFDM , known as the worlds’ first self contained Mobile Surgery Unit (MSU), was recognized by Rotary International with a Significant Achievement Award for RY 2007-2008, given by RI President Wilkinson. It also merited the RI Public Relations Award and the RI Presidential Citation Award given during the same Rotary Year.

The Mobile Surgery Unit is a self contained surgery van fabricated from a used twenty foot container van and equipped with its own power and water source, waste disposal system, modern surgery room equipments, air conditioning unit, power generator, water tank, water pump, septic tank with release hose, lavatory and toilet, and two operating tables with surgery lights.

With the MSU, the Club’s team of surgeons provide, for free, life saving surgical services to poor individuals, especially those who are denied access to quality medical services, even in those areas with community health centers and public funded infirmaries and hospitals. Surgical procedures undertaken at the MSU include:

A.) Removal of tumors and cysts
B.) Correction of harelip and cleft palate
C.) Treatments of patients with diabetes
D.) Surgical reconstruction
E.) Removal of boils
F.) Hernia
G.) Thyroid surgery

The Club’s MSU Team, led by Dr. Jim Sanchez, likewise provide on-site training to community based surgeons and nurses on performing surgery using the technique of regional blocking or localized anesthesia.

The Club has conducted surgical missions in the following: Bacolor,Pampanga; Marikina; San Mateo, Rizal; Sorsogon; Virac, Catanduanes; Legazpi Albay; Gapan, Nueva Ecija; various areas in Quezon City; and also at the National Bilibid Prison in Muntinglupa.
CHILDREN HEALTH EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

Launched in 2007 in partnership with the Dra. Fe Del Mundo Medical Center, the program aims to empower select school children, particularly Grades 4, 5 and 6 students of Sinagtala Elementary School in Q.C., to become health agents and help in the delivery of vital health care in school, their respective families, and communities. The children health empowerment program is a 12 hour lecture series on basic health practices, first aid, awareness of diseases, its early detection and prevention, health and sanitation and the taking of vital health signs.

Graduates of the program are provided with first aid kits and become members of the K-Forz or Kalusugan Force (Health Force). They shall form part of the core of the Early Act Club at Sinagtala Elementary School.

LIBRENG ALMUSAL (Feeding) WITH DEWORMING, AND ANEMIA DETECTION AND TREATMENTThe project involves supplemental feeding, deworming, detection and treatment of anemia, vitamins supplementation and periodic medical check up. It will likewise involve the parents though lectures on health and nutrition.

VISION SCREENINGTo conduct vision screening on elementary school students, for early detection and treatment. Reading glasses will be issued to students with vision problems. The project will include training of teachers on vision assessment and awareness campaign on eye care, blindness prevention and health and nutrition for parents.
A TB FREE GENERATION OF FILIPINO CHILDRENTuberculosis is still a major public health problem in the Philippines. Although children rarely spread the infection, those with tuberculosis should also be treated. Presently, there is no government program for the treatment of Tuberculosis in children.

The Anti-TB program shall be in partnership with the Department of Health and the different Rotary Clubs of D-378, and shall cover the following: health education, physical examination by a Physician, Tuberculin Testing, Chest Xray before and after six (6) months, Directly Observed Treatment Short Courses (DOTS) for six (6) months with daily doses of three (3) drugs: INH – 6 months; RIF- 6 months; PZA- 2months; Monthly follow-up by a physician during treatment and thereafter as needed.

RCSFDM’s Anti TB Program beneficiaries shall be the children at its adopted school- the Sinagtala Elementary School in Quezon City.

WATER AND SANITATION PROJECTThe installation of water fountains and rehabilitation of comfort rooms in public schools.

PROJECT KALINGA/MULING LAYAA project for Children in Conflict with the Law (CICLs), it provides legal assistance (Muling Laya – Freedom) , family care and support (Kalinga) to the youthful offenders residing at the National Training School for Boys (NTSB) in Tanay, Rizal. The support system involves moral boosting activities such as regular visits to residents of NTSB who are not receiving visits from their families; the holding of family day activities involving gift giving and games; and projects focusing on the health of the residents.

MULING HAKBANGTo provide prosthetic legs to the physically challenged, particularly to members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines who have suffered the loss of limbs during war. The prosthetic legs will come from Jaipur India through the Majaresh Foundation.

THE FILIPINO ON TIMEThe Filipino On Time Project is an awareness campaign on punctuality, reliability and dependability in all areas of delivery of goods and services. In 2007, the Club awarded institutions with the best practices in punctuality in the delivery of goods and services.

The Club shall pursue the awareness campaign in schools in Quezon City in partnership with the Department of Education . A module shall be developed, measuring the School’s adherence to punctuality. The Department of Education shall incorporate a merit system for schools with best practices in punctuality, in addition to the awards and recognition to be given by the Club.

The initial area of implementation shall cover all public schools in Quezon City, with the a goal of implementing the program nationally and be part of the school systems evaluation standards.

GOVERNOR PROS CRESCINI MEMORIAL ORATORICAL CONTEST
"THE CRESCINI MEMORIAL CUP"
.
The Oratorical Contest on “Service Above Self” is in Honor of PDG Pros Criscini, one of the finest speakers of RC-SFDM. It is a Quezon City-wide oratorical contest to be participated in by high school students in both public and private sectors. Elimination rounds will be held in four (4) districts in Quezon City, where there shall be one finalist in each district. The finalists will compete in a Quezon City-Wide Competition. Scholarship grants will be given to the finalists and cash prizes to the champion school and coach.

ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION ADVOCACY

  1. Puno Ng Buhay
    .
    A signature Project of RC-SFDM, the Club’s commits to promote the conservation and protection of the environment. The Club will undertake tree planting activities and continue to pursue the awarding of tree saplings to all of its resource speakers with the covenant that the recipient will plant and take care of the tree.
  2. Environmental preservation awareness campaign – A Climate Change Advocacy is an environmental preservation awareness campaign in public schools in Quezon City via lectures, film showings and environmental awareness generating activities like on-the spot–painting contest etc. Likewise, the club shall encourage and support the institution of sustainable environmental preservation projects.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTER

To establish an Early Childhood Development Center, and implement an Early Childhood Development Training Program for abandoned toddlers presently cared for at the Foundling Home, Boys Town Complex, Marikina.

The Early Childhood Development Program will address the foundlings’ psychological, intellectual and motor developments and provide a good educational foundation prior to their entry into formal schooling ( Grade 1). Presently, the foundlings in the center spend 3 to 4 years without adequate early childhood development intervention.

CAREER ORIENTATION SEMINAR The Club shall conduct career information seminars to Third Year High School Students at the E. Rodriguez High School. The program will help assess students’ interests and inclinations, guide them on appropriate college or vocational courses and possible career opportunities.

DRUG ABUSE PREVENTION AND AWARENESS CAMPAIGN A project in partnership with the Baranggay San Antonio and the Sangguniang Kabataan , this drug awareness campaign shall involve lecture forum and the creation of “Drug Watch” volunteers at the Baranggay level.

READING ADVOCACY PROJECT

To develop in children the love for reading through book-based story telling. Books will be made accessible to children and students through book donations and installation of reading corners in classrooms. The partnership of parents, teachers and carers shall be encouraged to provide programs and activities that will sustain interest in reading.

LIVELIHOOD PROJECT To provide livelihood training for gainful and productive livelihood projects.
